About the Item

This magnificent example of Venetian lacquer art dates back to the 18th century and represents the craftsmanship typical of the period. The tray, shaped and embellished with a complex polychrome decoration, is distinguished by the vividness of the colors and the quality of the painting. In the center is a pastoral scene, depicting figures immersed in a natural landscape with trees and architectural columns, a symbol of harmony between man and nature. All around, the border features a series of medallions depicting animals and country scenes, surrounded by ornamental motifs in red and black that recall the typical Venetian lacquer style. The signs of time give the object a unique charm, making it a rare and valuable piece for collectors and antique art lovers. A work of art that embodies the elegance and refinement of eighteenth-century Venice, perfect to enhance any collection of antiques or fine furniture. Setting It can be hung on the wall above a sofa, a beautiful gilded console or above a bed but also in a hallway. If desired, it can also be used as a coffee table top. Shaped edges The wavy edges of the tray create an elegant and harmonious design. The symmetrical shape adds a decorative touch typical of antique craft objects. The poor art The art of arte povera lacquer decoration developed mainly in 18th-century Venice, although it probably had origins in the previous century. This is a technique of applying thin, delicate paper prints to the surface of the object to be decorated, which are then lacquered. These precisely cut sheets of paper are glued to the object and then coated with a specific transparent varnish called sandrack. In this way, the thickness of the paper becomes imperceptible and detectable only by touch. Arte Povera is characterized by an understated approach and aesthetic sensibility, with limited use of expensive materials in favor of highly refined and sophisticated decorative effects. This style became popular in Europe around the first half of the eighteenth century. But by the late seventeenth century, the fashion for oriental art exploded thanks to imports from China and Japan, facilitated by the East India Company. In this context, Venetian decorators often made use of prints from the Remondini family, originally from Bassano del Grappa, which had an important print shop. This family produced remarkable engravings depicting landscapes, flowers, vases, animals and scenes of everyday life, many of which are still preserved in Palazzo Sturm in Bassano del Grappa.
