About the Item

Add charm and color to any wall with this elegant antique Aubusson drawing cartoon. Created in the tapestry town of Aubusson, France circa 1820, the gouache on paper is set in a carved giltwood frame under protective glass. The hand-painted pastoral composition features a young shepherdess seated among her flock, holding a flower and crook beneath a floral swag and draped canopy, all rendered in soft hues of green, rose, cream, and gold. The work exemplifies the romantic sensibility and refined palette typical of early 19th-century French decorative art. Tapestry cartoons served as full-scale models for woven masterpieces, guiding weavers in translating painted scenes into wool and silk. Each shade was meticulously matched, and the weaver’s artistry determined the final depth and luminosity. Aubusson, renowned since the 15th century and granted “Manufacture Royale” status by Louis XIV in 1665, became synonymous with these exquisite designs. This finely detailed example, with its Romantic pastoral theme and original hand-painted surface, embodies the grace and craftsmanship of France’s decorative tradition. The piece is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, with a rich, timeworn patina and minor restoration visible on the surface. Wired on the back for easy installation.
