About the Item

Delicate polychrome ink and mineral pigments on paper, realized most probably in the beginning of 19th Century. This long horizontal scroll vividly depicts a lively procession of insects, including grasshoppers, praying mantises, dragonflies, and beetles, rendered in meticulous detail and vibrant color. The composition is balanced by spacious negative areas, emphasizing each specimen’s form and movement. Calligraphy inscriptions and a red seal appear at the opening, adding scholarly elegance to the work. The scroll retains its original mounting and wooden rollers. Good overall condition; age-related creases, scattered stains, minor losses to mounting. A refined naturalist composition exemplifying the tradition of Edo-period Japan, prized for its fine brushwork and scientific yet poetic sensibility.
