About the Item
A refined figurative ceramic tile titled "Woman in the Rain" by Frank Gallo. Circa 1980s. Signed on the lower left with an annotation of 28/200. The composition presents a contemplative female portrait rendered in soft low relief, with delicately modeled facial features and a subtle, introspective gaze. Muted pastel glazes and finely incised linework suggest falling rain and patterned textiles, lending the work a quiet sense of atmosphere and movement. This artwork reflects Gallo’s mastery of ceramic as an expressive, painterly medium. Dimensions: 28.25"h x 16.25"w x 1"d (framed). In very good condition.
Frank Gallo is an acclaimed American ceramic artist best known for his refined figurative relief tiles that bridge sculpture, painting, and craft. His work has been widely exhibited in galleries and museums across the United States and internationally, earning recognition for its technical mastery and lyrical, classical sensibility. Gallo’s limited-edition ceramic works are held in prominent private and institutional collections, and his innovative approach to ceramic relief in the late 20th century has secured his reputation as a significant figure in contemporary ceramic art.

Frank Gallo
Frank Gallo, a sculptor was born in Toledo, Ohio, in 1933. From 1960, he was a professor of sculpture at the University of Illinois. He studied art from 1951–59 at the University of Toledo, Cranbrook Academy of Art, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan and the State University of Iowa. In the late 1950s, Gallo began to use the material polyester resin reinforced with fiberglass, which gives his sculpture a viscous finish. Although he is noted for his studies of women, some of whom are fancifully and colorfully clad, Gallo has also made sculptures of men, including Abraham Lincoln.
