About the Item

Ceramic wall relief from the series "Canne Organo" by Nino Caruso (1928–2017), Italy, 1972. The work is composed of sixteen ceramic panels forming an impressive square. The repetition of the sculptural tubular shapes results in a striking and minimal composition. The glazing displays a beautifully subtle crackle pattern that has developed over time, giving the piece an extra layer of desirable character. Caruso began his career in 1951, when he was hired by Salvatore Meli as an assistant in his studio at Villa Massimo in Rome. Through Meli, he was introduced to the vibrant art world of Villa Massimo, where he met Guttuso and other artists and intellectuals of the Roman avant-garde. After graduating from the State Art Institute in Rome in 1954, Caruso opened his own studio and soon established himself as a leading ceramic artist. In 1964, he created the monumental Monument to the Resistance in Pesaro. This work dates from shortly after that period, when Caruso explored the sculptural and architectural potential of ceramics through modular, serial compositions that investigate rhythm, repetition, and spatial dialogue. The work is mounted on four sturdy vertical wooden panels, allowing it to be easily hung on the wall and seamlessly connected to the other panels, while also facilitating transport. The piece remains in excellent condition.
