About the Item
This large-scale Italian Pietra Dura marble framed panel depicts a lovely evening scene of a church or monastery with grand walled and terraced gardens, with a line of clipped Cypress trees in the foreground and distant buildings behind. The sky is aglow with a pink setting sun.
This fine pietra dura picture is made up of approximately sixty separate pieces of hand-cut and shaped different marbles, all selected for their colour and natural representation of the elements they represent in this intriguing scene.
The picture is bordered in black marble with neatly mitred corners, and there is a signature in the bottom right, W. A. Pinina 1889.
The panel is in good original condition with no damage or repair. It is displayed in an old, broad, stepped and moulded wooden frame with a later hand-painted and marbled finish.
