About the Item

Rendered in 1976, this commanding mixed-media panel is a masterwork of geometric abstraction and experimental technique. Beckemeyer layered transparent red acetate with blue, orange, and yellow stenciled patterns, using expanded metal mesh as his stencil to deliver a mesmerizing, seemingly floating lattice of color and form. The result is a dynamic visual tension between vibrant hues and the optical dance of layered geometry. Its provenance is exceptionally well-documented: an acquisition note commemorates its purchase at the South County Bank art exhibition in St. Louis on July 12, 1976, securing its historical context. Additional archival labels include a gallery credit marking it as part of the “Red Plastic Paintings” series by Beckemeyer, and archival documentation linking it to the U.S. Bancorp art collection—an institutional endorsement of both quality and curatorial value. These back-panel notes remain intact, preserved beneath the acrylic protective surface. Though vintage wear is visible in the form of minor scratches on the acrylic and frame, these marks only underscore the authenticity and storied provenance of a work that’s remained largely untouched. Jack Beckemeyer’s oeuvre remains elusive in published records, yet this artwork stands as a compelling testament to his legacy. It is catalogued in at least one major U.S. university art collection, with additional institutional provenance lending it an elevated appeal for collectors seeking narrative-rich, experimental mid-century abstraction. Little is written about the artist himself. Despite little biographical information Jack Beckemeyer’s work is his legacy. Included in the Cleveland Art Museum’s collection and catalogued in the Dayton Art Institute. 65.5” Wide x 1.5” Deep x 48.25” High Painting and frame are in original condition. May be some scratches on acrylic panel and frame.

Robert Patrick Painted Acrylic over Vinyl Textile Fiber Art, 1991
Located in Chattanooga, TN
In this compelling late-20th century composition, Robert Patrick transcends the boundary between painting and textile, forging a luminous hybrid of color, texture, and sculptural depth. Executed in 1991, this work showcases acrylic layered onto vinyl textile fiber, the result: a surface that appears to breathe and shift, responding to light and perspective. What sets this piece apart is the dialogue between material and gesture. The vinyl fiber substrate introduces softness and dimensional relief; the acrylic pigment overlays, in hues that dance between subtle tonalities and bold contrasts, animate the underlying weave with fluid strokes. This interplay gives the impression that the surface is alive — that threads may pulse or shift under one’s gaze. Viewed from different angles, patterns of light and shadow travel across ridges and valleys of fiber. Areas of tension and release appear: in some parts, the acrylic is taut and flat; in others, it recedes, opening micro-shadows that deepen the sense of spatial layering. The edges, slightly irregular, emphasize the work’s handcrafted integrity rather than mechanical perfection. This is more than a decorative object; it is a distilled statement piece embodying the tension and poetry of late 20th-century material experiments. As a singular work from Patrick’s evolving practice, it commands attention as both art and artifact — one that enriches the collection it joins and invites sustained contemplation.
