This is an old, single-slab board made of Japanese cedar, believed to date back to the Meiji period (1860s–1900s). Cut from the trunk of a large, centuries-old cedar tree, it retains a powerful presence shaped over the course of countless years. It is truly a gift from the earth itself. The surface reveals a complex and organic grain pattern that could never be replicated by human hands. Its varied tones and flowing curves evoke ripples on water, drifting clouds, or even the contours of a map—sparking the viewer’s imagination. The edges preserve the tree’s natural form, avoiding the uniform straightness of processed wood. Instead, gentle undulations create beautiful shadows, lending the piece a sculptural quality. Depending on the angle and the light, its expression changes, offering new charm from moment to moment even in the same setting.
