About the Item

This is an old lacquered board made in Japan. It is called a "Negoro" board. Negoro is a type of Japanese lacquerware. It is characterized by applying black lacquer to the wood base and then applying red lacquer on top of that. It originated from lacquerware used by monks at a temple called Negoro-ji. It was produced in large quantities during the Edo period, and this Negoro lacquerware was used daily at many temples. Japanese people have loved Negoro lacquerware for its wabi-sabi aesthetic since ancient times. This board is thought to have been made using that traditional technique around 1900-1950. This board is thought to have been made as a top plate for a traditional Japanese heating device called "Kotatsu." The lacquer texture is like soba, and it looks like a painting when hung on the wall. It is very beautiful, like an abstract painting. Although it is old, there was almost no twist at the beginning and it is straight and horizontal. It is rare to find a lacquered board with such a nice atmosphere. It is rare. Highly recommended!
