About the Item

This is an old car door made in Japan, originating from an early model of the “Midget”, first introduced in 1957. The Midget symbolizes the dawn of Japan’s motorization—a small three-wheeled truck that became a beloved companion of postwar life. It served as transportation for shop owners, farmers, and everyday citizens, embodying the spirit of economic recovery and practical ingenuity that fueled Japan’s rapid growth. Constructed primarily of iron, the structure is extremely simple yet deeply refined. Its balanced interplay of straight and curved lines expresses the Japanese philosophy of “beauty in utility.” Unlike mass-produced items, this piece bears the subtle traces of handcraftsmanship—a testament to the human touch that defined its era. Over the decades, the paint has peeled away, revealing layers of delicate sky blue beneath a surface now marked by rust. The resulting texture resembles an abstract painting—an artwork shaped by time itself. The colors and corrosion patterns are not artificial but formed naturally over generations, creating a surface that no human hand could intentionally reproduce. That this car door has survived at all is remarkable. Once destined for disposal, it now endures as a poetic remnant of the past. Its weathered yet graceful presence embodies the Japanese wabi-sabi spirit—the beauty of impermanence and imperfection. No longer merely a functional object, it stands as a silent artwork infused with history, memory, and time. Please note that the corrosion has advanced, and the piece is delicate. It will be securely packed in a wooden crate for safe shipment. Weight: 5.5 kg _____________________________ Our Philosophy Objects always tell the truth. All I can do is just to face with them sincerely and give them deep affection as much as I can. There is no boundary of nationalities and of eras in beauty. But I think now is the time we choose 'Japanese style' and it will be the best way to remind us of what we are losing today and to question us about an essence of beauty again. I hope that you can touch the memories which the objects here have, feel and think of something invisible but exists undoubtedly.
