About the Item
A rare and unusually large surviving group of Qajar dynasty tiles (19th century, Persia/Iran), richly decorated in cobalt blue, turquoise, ochre yellow, and manganese. The tiles depict courtly scenes of elegantly dressed figures, attendants, and musicians, surrounded by fruit, bottles, and floral motifs — evoking the refined leisure culture of the Qajar elite.
Such tiles were originally set into the walls of aristocratic residences and palaces, serving both decorative and symbolic functions. They reflect the Qajar fascination with idealized beauty, poetry, and sociability, themes central to Persian art and literature. The flattened perspective, stylized garments, and linear drawing are all hallmarks of Qajar ceramic painting, which bridged Safavid tradition with a new 19th-century taste for bold color and narrative surface decoration.
What makes this example exceptional is the scale of the surviving ensemble — rarely do so many tiles remain together from a single architectural context, offering a window into the decorative programs of the period. Now mounted for display, they retain their vibrancy and strong graphic presence, making them striking works of both historical and decorative importance.
