This delightful work by French Pointillist Daniel Tixier radiates with luminous light and vibrant colour. Nicely presented in an appropriate frame and mount, it is a beautifully balanced composition that invites quiet contemplation.
Although little is known about Tixier’s life, records indicate he was born in France in 1862. His work was mentioned in American Art News in connection with an exhibition at the Société Moderne, held at the world-renowned Galerie Durand-Ruel in Paris in 1910. The article praised his paintings for their “pleasing effects of artificial and outdoor lighting,” a quality evident in the subtle interplay of sunlight in this piece.
Galerie Durand-Ruel, one of the most prestigious galleries of its time, played a pivotal role in the promotion of the Impressionists. Run by the influential art dealer Paul Durand-Ruel (1831–1922), the gallery was instrumental in bringing the works of Monet, Renoir, Pissarro, and others to prominence, particularly among American collectors.
Further reference to Tixier appears in Christie’s archives, which note that he exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1902 — a significant achievement in the career of any French artist of the period.
This painting offers not only aesthetic charm but also a connection to an important period in the history of French art.
