About the Item

This is the top board of a work table once used daily by a lacquerware craftsman during the Showa period in Japan. Originally part of a full workbench with drawers, only the top now remains—but it carries with it the beautiful traces of use, resembling an abstract painting. The craftsman used this board while applying lacquer to lacquerware pieces. Through countless cycles of applying and wiping black lacquer, a naturally formed, painterly pattern emerged, giving the surface a unique and organic aesthetic. The wood appears to be cedar or pine, and the natural grain interacts with the tones of the lacquer to create a sense of depth and quiet intensity. When hung on a wall, it exudes a presence similar to that of modern art, lending a sense of tension and refinement to the space. While it holds the qualities of an artwork, it also retains the warmth of natural materials and handmade craftsmanship, bringing a touch of nature and narrative to more minimal interiors. Its compact size also makes it easy to incorporate into a living room or gallery wall. On the reverse side, several wooden battens have been affixed, allowing the piece to be temporarily mounted on a wall using nails or screws. However, since there is a risk of it falling during vibrations or earthquakes, we recommend using L-shaped brackets or similar hardware to ensure a stable and secure installation. There is a slight warp to the board, but it does not affect its use. Overall, it remains in beautiful condition.
