About the Item

An exquisite pair of 18th century giltwood framed engravings of battle scenes from ancient Greece of Alexander the Great at the Battle of Erie against Porus. French engraver Gérard Audran was commissioned to engrave the pieces at the request of Louis XIV as the regular engraver and was brought in from Rome by Le Brun, who created the original work that these were based off of. Printed by Mortar on paper. The frames are old but not original to the pieces. Created circa 1665. Makers markings are present on the lower center left of at both of the pieces. Le Brun’s signature is present to the left of the “lavert est…” paragraph. While the signature is more clear on one, upon closer examination the engraver’s mark is present on both. The other markings below the engravings detail the narrative of the piece as well as descriptive title captions in a 17th century form of French (La Vertv Plaist Qvoy Qve Vaincve, modern translation is "LA VERTU PLAIST QUOY QUE VAINCUE" or “Virtue pleases, though conquered” or “Virtue pleases even when vanquished” suggesting a certain nobility in battle. ) and Latin (Sic Virtvs Et Victa Placet, or "Thus virtue, even in defeat, is pleasing.). The titles of the other piece are “La Vert Est Digne De Empire Dv Monde” (La Vertu est digne de l'Empire du Monde / Virtue is worthy of the empire of the world) and “Digna Orbis Empirio Virtvs” (this is a latin version of the same phrase and translates to Virtue is worthy of the empire of the world”). The text below these titles detail the story of the battles of Alexander the Great. In fair condition. Art is in good condition. The frames on both pieces are in fragile condition. The pieces are currently wrapped in glassine and packing material. Wear is present on the frame in sections. Some wear and loss present on the backs as well. Aging is evident on the print consistent with the period in which it was created. These framed pieces would make a great accent in a living room or dining room. They capture a captivating and intensely memorialized moment in history.
