About the Item

A pair of carved and gilded chestnut architectural elements. Both vigorously carved in high relief from a single section of chestnut with its first gilded finish still in place, they are a masterpiece of the Baroque style used widely throughout Porto in the early 18th century. Portuguese, Porto, first quarter of the 18th century. The sixty pieces for sale in our collection were removed from a church in Porto prior to demolition in 1979/80, they have remained in storage since then until being rediscovered earlier this year. Price is for the pair as shown.
