About the Item
Decorate a dining room or kitchen wall with this colorful pair of antique Majolica platters. Sculpted in France circa 1850, each plate features a deeply molded profile bust in Renaissance attire, one depicting King François I of France, the other his second wife, Eleanor of Austria. The plates are surrounded by a thick, relief-molded border of fruiting vines, berries, and foliage over a brilliant cobalt blue ground. Both pieces exemplify the richness and three-dimensionality of early French Majolica, inspired by 16th-century Italian maiolica portrait wares.
The pair is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, showcasing a vibrant palette of deep blue, pale green, and earthy brown glazes, with minor surface irregularities typical of handmade faience of the period. Ready to hang, these decorative wall platters add bold color and sculptural charm to a traditional or eclectic interior.
