About the Item

A remarkable pair of French 19th century Louis XVI st. Belle Époque period ormolu and Mahogany decorative wall plaques signed F. Barbedienne. Each plaque is set on an elegant Mahogany backplate with fine scalloped bases and tops. The central ormolu plaques display fine mottled rectangular borders with striking masks amidst scrolled foliate designs at the bases and at the tops. Each plaque depicts beautiful elegant maidens draped in wonderfully executed flowing garments standing on a pedestal and holding water vessels. All original gilt throughout. Ferdinand Barbedienne (1810 – 1892), a renowned French Bronzier. Between 1850 and 1854 his firm, Barbedienne, provided furnishings in the Renaissance Revival style for the Hôtel de Ville, Paris. They received numerous medals at the International Exhibitions, including medals in three different classes at the International Exhibition of 1862 in London.
