About the Item
A superb and extremely decorative pair of French 19th century Louis XVI st. Ormolu plaques. This stunning pair of 19th century plaques is signed by French poet Charles-Joseph de Ligne, Prince de Ligne, and stamped The Valsuani Foundry. Each richly chased circular plaque has a mottled border with an elegant pierced tied ribbon above. At the center of one plaque is the goddess Némésis protecting the god Zeus in the form of a swan while holding a shawl blowing in the wind in the the other hand. The other plaque showcases the beautiful O'Danaë laying back while being showered in gold by the god Jupiter. The back of each plaque displays the poetic inscriptions by Charles-Joseph de Ligne, Prince de Ligne. All original gilt throughout and in a stunning satin and burnished finish.
The Valsuani Foundry, established in Paris in the late 19th century by master caster Claude Valsuani and later operated by his son Georges, became renowned for its exceptional cire perdue (lost-wax) bronze casting. Celebrated for its precision and artistry, the foundry produced bronzes for leading modern artists—including Rodin, Degas, Claudel, Picasso, and Giacometti—earning a lasting reputation as one of France’s finest art foundries.
