About the Item

An impressive and high quality pair of French 19th century Louis XVI st. Plaster and Ebony plaques, signed G. Beck Sc. Each exceptionally sculpted plaque, in the manner of Clodion, is set within a handsome mottled Ebony frame. Both plaques showcase intricately detailed scenes of winged cherubs amidst clouds, flowers, and butterflies. The plaque to the right showcases a maiden supported on a Neo-Classical style urn with cascading flowers, while the left plaque features a winged maiden, possibly Psyche, surrounded by cherubs and abundant bouquets of flowers. Wonderful subject matter and attention to detail throughout. Georges Beck was a late-19th to early-20th century French decorative sculptor known for his Rococo-revival reliefs featuring allegorical female figures, putti, and floral motifs. His works, often executed in plaster or composition and signed “G. Beck Sc.,” were created for refined interior decoration during the Belle-Époque period.
