About the Item

A wonderfully decorative pair of Italian 19th century Neo-Classical st. Grand Tour Period Giltwood and Exotic Wood plaques. Each highly detailed inlaid panel is based on frescoes from Pompeii and is set within a rectangular mottled Giltwood frame with an ebonized outer band. Both plaques display wonderfully inlaid scenes, with one open winged cherub motivating goats by offering them some water in a bowl. A classically dressed maiden is seated in a stunning chariot, while a cherub leads the goats in front. Ahead of the pack is a female nymph sitting on a panther while holding a staff. The other panel is of a cherub racing his chariot lead by deer, while the other chariot is stopped. The cherub in the stopped chariot seems to be taught how to guide his deer by another cherub while another is giving them water to drink out of a bowl.
