About the Item

A Pair of Monumental Meiji Period Japanese Cloisonné Enamel Chargers Attributed to the Hayashi Kodenji Studio, late 19th century, Japan Diameter: 30 in. (76.2 cm) each This extraordinary pair of chargers exemplifies the highest level of craftsmanship achieved during Japan’s Meiji era (1868-1912), a time when cloisonné enamel was elevated to a fine-art medium and sought after by collectors and world expositions. Each charger measures fully thirty inches across — a monumental size, far larger than typical decorative pieces of the period — and immediately commands a presence suitable for museum display or premier private collection. The surfaces are richly adorned in multiple layers of vitreous enamel, applied in varying thicknesses to produce a deep relief and captivating interplay with light. Each central roundel features graceful red-capped cranes in flight, set above an abundant profusion of peonies, foliage, and other florals—symbols of longevity, good fortune, and imperial patronage in Japanese iconography. Around the broad rim one finds charging dragons and ho-ho birds (feng-huang), creatures of mythic power and auspiciousness, rendered with remarkable vitality and subtle shading. The reverse side of each charger continues the refinement: a cobalt-blue ground filled with fine wire scrollwork, the underside of the production showing the same care and uniformity as the obverse. Condition is reported as very good: the enamel remains undamaged, the colours vivid and clean, with only minor light surface scratches commensurate with age. The Hayashi Kodenji Studio was among the leading cloisonné workshops of the Meiji period known for pioneering large-scale enamels and high-relief techniques. Works of such scale and technical ambition are exceedingly rare — most cloisonné production during this era was limited to vases, small jardinières, boxes and lapel objects; chargers of this diameter were likely made for exhibition or imperial presentation. Consequently this pair represents a tour de force of Japanese enamelling: both in scale and in the rich pictorial programme of classical motifs tied to the highest echelons of Meiji Japan. Excellent condition, offering immediate display quality for a major collection or museum installation.
