About the Item

"To Melbourne for Gold": Sailor's Woolwork of the British Ship Gold Finder Dated 1864 A rare and historically significant Sailor's Woolwork Picture (or "Woolie"), detailed with a prominent inscription identifying the subject, date, and maker. The textile depicts a portside view of the British Ship Gold Finder, a three-masted iron vessel under full sail, navigating blue waters against a sky of stitched white clouds. The needlework is meticulously executed, capturing the complex rigging and the red ensign flying from the stern. Below the image is a banner with the embroidered inscription: "The British Ship GOLD-FINDER on her Voyage to MELBOURN, AUGUST 2nd 1864. Worked by T.J. Francis." Measurements: Framed: 28 3/10 inches high x 31 inches wide (72 cm x 79 cm). Historical Context: The Gold Finder was an iron ship built in 1863 by J. Laing of Sunderland. While originally laid down as a collier (coal ship), the intense demand created by the Australian Gold Rush led to her conversion into a passenger vessel. Contemporary advertisements, such as a notice in the Liverpool Mercury (1853), marketed her with considerable hyperbole, boasting of "novel and peculiar" ventilation arrangements "such as no other passenger ship ever possessed". This woolwork serves as a personal artifact of that era, likely stitched by a crew member named T.J. Francis during the long voyage to Melbourne. The piece connects directly to the mid-19th-century migration boom, triggered by Edward Hargraves' discovery of gold in New South Wales in 1851, which drew thousands of fortune seekers from Liverpool to the antipodes on ships like this one. Condition: Good antique condition. Colors remain distinct; housed in a period-style frame. Some wool loss. (Ref: NY10224-ikrr)
