About the Item
Beautifully framed lithograph of Sunol Alvar’s “The Guitarist and the Pigeons.” The print bears Alvar’s signature and is housed in a gold colored metal frame with a panel of acrylic protecting the art. The romantic image elegantly captures the spirit of modern Spanish artistic aesthetic influenced by Picasso. There is poetry in the form and pattern that parallels the lyrical aspect of music. White doves hold attentive audience to the cloaked female guitarist. This print originated in New York as evidenced by a label reading “Kulicke/Contract, 636 Broadway New York.”
Sunol Alvar is an accomplished painter and sculpture born in Catalan, Spain in 1935. By age 22 Alvar had already mounted his own solo exhibition in Barcelona and soon earned a scholarship to study art in France. In 1960 Alvar was signed to French gallery Galerie Drouant and later the Charpentier Gallery. During his time in Paris Alvar exhibited alongside other Iberian greats such as Dali, Picasso, and Miro. In 1962 Alvar made is American debut with an exhibition at Monede Gallery. Afterward he returned to Paris and produced a series of lithographs for Galerie Drouant which became popular among art collectors in Europe and North America. Alvar returned to Spain after 10 years in France. In later years Alvar gave up producing lithographs in favor of large scale paintings. Alvar continued to be commissioned for substantial works into the early 21st century. His work is held in the permanent collections of in Museums, Institutes, and Universities throughout the world.
