About the Item

CARVED WALKING STICK WITH AVIAN HANDLE Probably English or Continental, circa early 20th century 34 3/8" H x 1" D x 4 5/8" W This finely carved walking stick features a carefully detailed bone handle in the form of a stylized bird, likely a toucan or hornbill, its elongated beak curving gracefully to form the crook. The surface of the head is incised with geometric plumage patterns which create a subtle texture and definition to the handle. The cane tapers slightly, the hardwood carefully stippled and finished in a warm, silky translucent patina. It terminates in a simple ferrule. Condition: Very good original condition, minor wear along the shaft and faint age-related hairlines to the handle. Stable, sturdy and fully functional. ref. 509DKA15P About silla antiques art Established in 2009, we have available in our 9000 square foot brick-and-mortar gallery an ever-changing selection of carefully curated and catalogued furniture, decorative arts, paintings, sculpture and estate jewelry.
