About the Item

This time we will be introducing some very rare item. This is a tool called a "hoiro" (roaster) used in tea leaf production, believed to have been made in Japan between the Meiji and early Showa periods. A hoiro was used as a workbench for rolling and drying steamed tea leaves during the tea-making process, making it a rare tool rarely seen today. This hoiro has a simple yet functional structure, with washi paper carefully stretched over a wooden frame, revealing the ingenuity used to delicately dry the tea leaves without damaging them. The tension on the paper is just right, making it look like a canvas. The fact that unused washi paper was reused also speaks to the wisdom of the time. The paper is densely covered with overlapping calligraphy, each piece imprinted with the mark of a human hand, creating a charm as if weaving together fragments of memory. The wear, tear, and discoloration that come with age add depth to the piece, exuding a tranquil expression reminiscent of a collage of ancient documents. Turning to the back, the shades of ink soak into the wood unfold, creating a world reminiscent of an abstract painting. The texture, born by chance from natural bleeding and burning, has a beauty reminiscent of modern art pieces, and its quiet presence blends into the space. It truly seems like a one-of-a-kind painting, painted over the years of use. As for the condition, the washi paper shows some tears, stains, and small holes, but we hope you will understand these as part of the piece's unique character. In the center of the back, there are traces of several layers of washi paper, which also speak to the history of this roaster. To display it, use L-shaped metal fittings, as seen in the detailed photo, to hang it on the wall and enjoy it as interior décor.
