1988 Nude Male Artist Studio Sketch from New York City Estate Contemporary Frame

About the Item

A late 1980's academic style nude male artist sketch or study of an African American man from a New York City estate in the Chelsea / West Village area. The work is done in a colored pencil medium on a heavy paper support, signed illegibly and dated. Presented in a contemporary wood molding, under glass and with a papered back, coated wire and d-ring hardware, the modern frame speaks to the immediacy and strength of the artwork. This work was created during the financial revival of New York City in the 1980's. This era also saw the rise of art created to combat an ever widening wealth gap, rampant social inequality, the crack epidemic as well as an all new disease that was decimating the art world - AIDS. And so artists (think of Basquiat, Haring, Warhol) used their voice to shed light on the dark recesses that many other people wanted to avoid. New York City in the 1980's was already known for creative disruptors - think Hip Hop and graffiti artists - and the new wave of gay and queer artists were poised to open wide the eyes and minds of NYC and the world. But there was another elephant in the room. Race. African Americans faced all of the aforementioned challenges, yet their skin color kept them out of the conversation. Enter art done by African American artists. Voice to the silent. Each sketch depicts a moment. A moment in the midst of a life, a joy, a fear, a desire, a reflection, a crisis. Moments that speak to race, wealth, society and health. Moments that bare all. While the identity of the artist is unknown, clearly their voice through the art is to be heard loud and clear, understood by all and as a lasting legacy to this vitally important period of time in New York City and the world.
