About the Item
The Captain’s Despair – Naval War Illustration by Charles Burki, 1970
This dramatic original gouache illustration by Charles Burki (1909–1994), signed and dated 1970, captures a searing moment of human emotion amid the chaos of naval warfare. The scene shows a ship’s captain leaning on the railing of his vessel, his face buried in his hands as a massive explosion erupts in the sea nearby. Behind him, a fellow officer watches grimly from the deck, the horizon filled with smoke and fire.
Executed in Burki’s masterful monochrome technique, the composition conveys both movement and silence — the crashing waves and falling debris juxtaposed against the captain’s quiet, personal anguish. Burki’s use of light and contrast heightens the psychological tension: the white spray and metallic sheen of the ship’s surfaces illuminate the despair of command, the heavy burden of survival and loss.
This work likely reflects Burki’s own wartime memories and his deep empathy for those who endured combat. Born in Bandung, Dutch East Indies, Burki experienced the Pacific War firsthand. As a civilian internee under Japanese occupation, he survived both the bombing of a transport ship and the atomic explosion over Nagasaki in 1945. After returning to the Netherlands, he channeled those harrowing experiences into powerful visual storytelling — often depicting the tragedy and heroism of war with rare emotional truth.
The Captain’s Despair represents Burki’s mature postwar period, when his illustrations appeared in leading Dutch publications such as Elsevier and Panorama. His scenes from both fiction and reportage bridged documentary realism and cinematic drama, rendered with extraordinary technical control and moral sensitivity.

German Torpedo Boat Division at Sea – 1903 Chromolithograph by Hugo Graf
Located in Langweer, NL
Title: German Torpedo Boat Division at Sea – 1903 Chromolithograph by Hugo Graf
This 1903 chromolithograph by Hugo Graf from 'Deutschland zur See' depicts a division of German Imperial Navy torpedo boats maneuvering at sea. The print, measuring approximately 20 x 33 cm on its original 39 x 51 cm mount, captures the torpedo boats in formation against a dramatic sky at sunset, symbolizing the agility and speed of these vessels. Torpedo boats were a critical element of Germany’s coastal defense strategy and naval tactics in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, designed to launch fast, surprise attacks on larger warships. The print’s mount has slight wear and spotting, adding to its historical appeal. This artwork is ideal for collectors interested in the evolution of naval warfare and pre-WWI German...
