About the Item
A rare and fascinating group of three drawings, beautifully presented together in modern frames with UV-protective glass and surrounded by high-quality black pasteboard mounts. This unique set spans centuries of artistic tradition and offers both historical and conversational appeal:
- Study of a Man’s Head and Half Bust (18th century, French school, “à la façon d’alfas”)
An expressive portrait sketch capturing the upper body and head of a man, rendered with fluid draftsmanship typical of the French academic tradition.
- Battle Scene with Knights and Castle (16th century, in the manner of Luca Cambiaso)
A dynamic composition depicting an armored clash before a castle backdrop, characterized by strong line work and vigorous energy. On the verso, an unexpected treasure: a whimsical 20th-century drawing in a Picasso-like style. While not authenticated, its resemblance to Picasso’s lively hand is notable- particularly given that the group of works originated in Mougins, where the artist lived and was known to sketch spontaneously for friends on any available paper. In order to view this mysterious backside, the drawing has to be carefully removed from the frame and from its pasteboard.
- Venus (16th century, in the manner of Luca Cambiaso)
A graceful depiction of the goddess of love, echoing the refined Mannerist sensibility associated with Cambiaso and his circle.
The paper of all three drawings has water marks.
Together, these drawings form a captivating collector’s set- bridging Renaissance elegance, Enlightenment portraiture, and even a possible modern master’s playful hand.

Condition: Excellent presentation; drawings secured in protective frames with conservation-grade glass.

The pair of sheets, in good condition, is framed by antique frames in carved and gilded wood. They show some china studies with some studies for different subjects. Specifically, the first sheet represents the design of a frieze of Renaissance taste under which are some studies probably referring to a family coat of arms. Below the center is a monogram “A.M.”.
