About the Item

Early Rural Scene by Charles Burki, 1940 – Dutch Farm Life Realist Gouache This painting, signed and dated Charles Burki – 1940, is an exceptional early work by the Dutch-Indonesian illustrator and wartime survivor Charles Burki (1909–1994). Executed in gouache in a refined monochrome palette, it depicts a vivid rural scene centered around a shirtless man seated before a table of medical instruments, surrounded by onlookers in a farmyard. A tethered cow, a milk can, and rustic surroundings evoke the atmosphere of Dutch country life on the eve of the Second World War. Burki’s cinematic realism captures both the psychological intensity and quiet dignity of everyday people. The strong chiaroscuro modeling gives sculptural weight to each figure, from the stoic farmer with a pipe to the worried woman and the observing child. The focal point is the man’s extended arm and the attentive figures around him, suggesting a moment of first aid, resilience, or perhaps moral strength in hardship. Every detail—from the glint of metal instruments to the patterned tablecloth—contributes to the authenticity of the rural setting. Painted just before the outbreak of war, this work gains further depth when considered alongside Burki’s later life. During World War II, Burki was interned by Japanese forces in the Dutch East Indies, survived the bombing of his ship, and endured the atomic bombing of Nagasaki. These extraordinary experiences marked him profoundly, and his later illustrations often explored the themes of human endurance, compassion, and courage in the face of adversity. This early piece foreshadows that emotional realism, already visible in his sensitive treatment of light and expression. Charles Burki worked in the late 1930s and 1940s as a commercial illustrator and painter for Dutch magazines, books, and advertisements, blending academic draftsmanship with storytelling skill. This painting stands as a rare example of his pre-war narrative work and a compelling document of rural life rendered through the eye of an artist who would later depict humanity under far more extreme circumstances. Condition report: Very good condition with minor age toning around the edges and light mounting traces. The gouache surface is clean and well preserved with deep tonal contrast. Framing suggestion: A dark wooden or black frame with a neutral off-white mount will emphasize the depth of the monochrome tones and the powerful human expressions. Technique: Gouache on paper Maker: Charles Burki, Dutch-Indonesian (1909–1994), signed and dated 1940
