About the Item
An arresting assemblage of nude figures, executed in white chalk on a dramatic black background, this drawing shows the artist's mastery of the human figure in various poses supine, kneeling, striding and sitting. The artist may be Arthur Bowen Davies, known for his groups of lithe nude figures in pastoral or mythological settings. Davies, interestingly, was also one of the driving forces behind the famous 1913 Armory Show in New York, which helped to introduce the American public to modern and Cubist art, both domestic and international. The drawing is on black paper mounted on cardboard.
