About the Item

Drawn with great economy, yet highly sensual, this depiction of two nude male figures in tight embrace was made by Jacques Azéma, the French artist who spent most of his artistic life in Morocco. Azéma was especially interested in the nation's young men, and depicted them again and again as they sat in the hammams or courtyards of Marrakech, often drinking tea or smoking a pipe. He settled there in 1930, teaching for years at the École des Beaux-Arts in Casablanca, and working in the medina. As M-F Giacolette and C. Gonzáles-Aller noted, "“His small-format paintings are like jewels that reveal a dreamlike representation of Morocco, a landscape of the unconscious whose pictorial language is closer to that of a true Surrealist inspired by Giorgio de Chirico or Pierre Puvis de Chavannes." An important exhibition of Azéma's work was recently organized by Musée YVES SAINT LAURENT Marrakech. The drawing was exhibited at the Galerie Philippe Chesnoy in Paris; it is executed in ink on warm brown paper; the artist is identified on the reverse. Dimensions include the frame.
