Émile-Othon Friesz (1879–1949) — Female Portrait, circa 1925–1935
Original pencil drawing on laid paper.
Portrait of a woman with her head slightly tilted, rendered with a lively and concise line, characteristic of Friesz's mature period.
A great economy of means expresses the essential: a few confident lines suffice to establish the presence of the model, her expression, and the balance of volumes, without graphic overload.
Émile-Othon Friesz, a French painter and draughtsman born in Le Havre in 1879 and died in Paris in 1949, is one of the major figures of French modernism.
A contemporary of Matisse, Dufy, and Braque, he participated in Fauvism before adopting a more personal, structured, and sensitive style, always seeking the essence in line and movement.
