Jean Louis Forain (1852-1931) was an artist close to the Impressionists. He was one of the most brilliant and incisive artists of his generation. A friend and contemporary of Degas, Manet, and Toulouse-Lautrec, he participated in the last Impressionist exhibitions and distinguished himself with his scenes of Parisian life, his depictions of the world of entertainment, and his lively figure studies. A member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts, Forain was also a feared caricaturist and columnist, publishing in many newspapers of his time.
