About the Item
A modern graphite drawing on paper by Cranbrook artist Glen Michaels. Signed in pencil bottom right. Circa 2000s. A simple composition featuring an orchid in bloom. Glen’s sculptural artwork can be found in public installations throughout Metro Detroit. A unique opportunity to collect a rare artwork by a celebrated Cranbrook artist. Provenance: From the personal collection of Glen Michaels. Measures 14 inches tall and 11 inches wide. In excellent condition.
Glen Michaels (1927-2020) is a sculptor and painter, and his studio was in Birmingham, Michigan, where he lived and worked most of his life. His work installations include the Bricktown Station (Detroit People Mover) Bricktown Station, the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, the IMF in Washington, D.C. and the Ford Motor Company 1964 New York World's Fair exhibit (now installed in the Henry Ford Centennial Library). Mr. Michaels was honored and exhibited at the Scarab Club in Detroit, at the time of his 90th birthday. In 2017, Mr. Michaels was asked by the Downtown News Magazine to name his favorite sculpture. He replied, "Whatever is the most recent is always my favorite."

This very nice drawing is a view of a romantic garden.
In the background, we see a high base topped by a statue of a 19th century figure along with other architectural ruins.
Central to the composition is a leafy tree with a leaning trunk.
The beautiful flowering iris plant in the foreground gave the drawing its title.
The iris has a very long history, as it was known even at the time of the ancient Egyptians and other ancient peoples.
It is well documented that in Europe the iris's rhizome was used as a linen perfume.
It was named for Iris, the Greek messenger of the gods, who according to Greek mythology, had wings of gold shining with dew, which when lit by the sun rays were decked with all the colors of the rainbow.
Also according to this legend, Iris was Juno's favourite goddess because she only bore good news.
Juno decided to reward her by turning her into the iris (the rainbow) which was said to be the link between heaven and earth.
