About the Item
Although William Baziotes is justifiably famous for his Surrealist and Biomorphic paintings later in his career, his extraordinary talent is evident in his early works as well. This drawing of a nude male model, no doubt executed at the National Academy of Design in New York in the mid-1930s, clearly shows the influence of Leon Kroll, who was Baziotes' teacher at the Academy. The artist shows great sensitivity in capturing the model's pensive expression, and took time to work out the details of his eyes and mouth. The drawing is executed in charcoal on a lovely, ruddy-brown paper. (Dimensions include frame).
