About the Item
Drawn by Robert Hale Ives Gammell, this depiction of a nude male figure holding a stylized child aloft is brilliant evidence of the artist's mastery of draughtsmanship. Gammell loved to depict the nude or Classicized figure in allegorical settings, and is best known for his murals at the Newark Public Library. Early in his career he apprenticed to William McGregor Paxton, and both artists give the human figure a velvety finish. The medium is pencil on paper. (Dimensions include matte.).
