About the Item

A brilliant example of Stile Littorio or Italian Rationalist design promulgated by Mussolini in 1930s Italy, this original drawing by Armando Bernabiti depicts his proposal for a streamlined cinema in the newly built town of Portolago (now Lakki) in Greece, then controlled by Italy. Bernabiti designed much of Portolago, including this theater which is preserved to this day. Here, he depicts the cinema with a dramatically curving front facade, stripped-down columns or piers, and a sweeping eyebrow sunshade over the entrance. The drawing is executed in charcoal, tempera, graphite and airbrushed paint on a heavy paperboard, and is stamped by Bernabiti's firm in the lower righthand corner. Bernabiti was an important figure in 1930s design in Italy, and is most famous today for designing the aquarium and national theater in Rhodes.

Arguably the greatest work of Georg Pauli, one of Sweden's leading Modernist painters in the 1920s, 30s and 40s, this Art Deco-Cubist work depicts the great Nike sculpture on the grounds of the home of Prince Eugens on Cape Waldemar in central Stockholm (known in Swedish as Prins Eugens Waldemarsudde).
