About the Item

Original Illustration “Postwar Modern Life” by Charles Burki, 1952 – Pen and Ink Drawing Dynamic original pen and ink drawing by Dutch illustrator Charles Burki (1909–1994), signed and dated “Charles Burki ’52” lower right. This meticulously executed composition captures the energy and optimism of the early postwar era, reflecting the reconstruction spirit of the 1950s through a montage of modernity — architecture, aviation, technology, and fashion. At the center stands a man in a suit, representing the forward-looking professional of the modern age. Around him orbit vignettes of progress: a jet plane streaks across the sky, a racing car symbolizes innovation and speed, and in the lower section rises a futuristic building illuminated by searchlights — a visual metaphor for postwar ambition and technological rebirth. A portrait of a uniformed officer, likely referencing Allied leadership and the stability that followed the war, anchors the composition with gravitas. Meanwhile, Japanese motifs such as the five-story pagoda and rickshaw evoke Burki’s personal connection to Asia and his experiences during World War II. Biographical Note: Charles Burki was born in the Dutch East Indies (Indonesia) in 1909 and trained as an architect before becoming a professional illustrator and painter. His technical precision and compositional discipline were strongly rooted in architectural drawing. Burki’s life was profoundly shaped by the Second World War. When Japan invaded the Dutch East Indies, he was captured and interned in a Japanese prison camp. He survived unimaginable ordeals — including the sinking of a Japanese transport ship by Allied torpedoes while he was aboard, and later, the atomic bombing of Nagasaki, where he was imprisoned at the time. Few artists lived through such catastrophic experiences. These near-death events forged his extraordinary sense of resilience and gave his postwar work a quiet emotional depth beneath its technical control. After liberation, Burki returned to the Netherlands, where his career flourished. He became one of the most talented illustrators of the 1950s and 1960s, working for *Elsevier*, *Studio*, and *De Haagse Post*. His subjects ranged from historical battles and colonial scenes to technological advances and contemporary culture, all rendered with precise draughtsmanship and cinematic tension. This 1952 illustration is a quintessential example of Burki’s postwar optimism — a visual narrative of humanity rebuilding after devastation, expressed through clean architectural lines and disciplined penwork. His use of white highlights, cross-hatching, and contrasting black fields gives the drawing a graphic clarity reminiscent of classic magazine illustration and propaganda art of the era. Condition report: Excellent preservation overall, with only light toning and faint age spots. The black ink remains dense, and the white gouache highlights are crisp. Mounted with a modern acid-free mat for protection. Framing tips: A minimalist black or brushed aluminium frame with a light ivory mat enhances the contrast and complements the technical precision of the drawing. Ideal for display in an office, study, or modern art setting. Technique: Pen and ink with white highlights on paper Maker: Charles Burki, The Netherlands, 1952
