About the Item
Cirque Medrano chalk Illustrations by André Legrand-Chabrier. André Legrand-Chabrier (1876-1945) was a French novelist, journalist, illustrator and chronicler of the French circus. One illustration is of a dog trainer with a French poodle in a skirt, the other a seal trainer with four seals and a beach ball. Chabrier was the Secrétaire Général of the Paris circus who chronicled the circus and was in charge of it's press and public relations. They are framed with ebony wood frames, beige mats and protective glass.
Because of the circus' proximity to Montmartre, the circus attracted many artists including Renoir, Degas, and Lautrec. Mrs. Fernando, who oversaw the box office, decided to let the painters work freely in the circus during rehearsals and watch the performances free of charge. Watercolor and pastel. André Legrand-Chabrier
André Legrand-Chabrier was a French novelist, journalist, illustrator and chronicler of the French circus. He held positions of administrative responsibility at the ABC, then at the Cirque Médrano, as an administrator, until 1932. On the death of his friend Jean-Marcel Chabrier, son of musician Emmanuel Chabrier, Legrand became the heir of copyright and moral rights over their common work. Consequently associating his name with that of his friend, he signed his articles and works under the pseudonym, Legrand-Chabrier.
