A contemporary abstract pen and ink wash on paper titled "Circle in a Square" by Paul VerBurg. Hand signed lower right. The composition explores spatial tension and balance through layered abstraction. Soft-edged ovals in blues and greens cluster at the composition’s center, floating within a field of overlapping geometric forms—most notably a bold red square and a shadowy, angular block. The contrast between fluid, organic shapes and rigid structures creates a dialogue between motion and containment. Surrounding the central image is a meticulously stippled pen-and-ink border that offers a quiet, meditative texture. This work exemplifies VerBurg’s deft merging of geometry and gesture, emotion and form. From a private collection. Dimensions: 30.75 inches tall, 25.5 inches wide, and 1 inch deep (framed). In excellent condition. Paul VerBurg is a multidisciplinary artist trained in drawing and painting at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. Now based in Okemos, Michigan, VerBurg explores sculpture, assemblage, and abstract painting rooted in natural and physical forms. His work—ranging from plein air landscapes to genre-blending abstractions—has been exhibited nationally at institutions including the Eiteljorg Museum and the Autry Museum, and featured in Southwest Art and Art of the West. Active since the 1980s, his practice reflects a continual evolution of media and subject.
