A contemporary abstract pen and ink wash on paper titled "Rufescent" by Paul VerBurg. Hand signed lower right. Deep reds and smoky violets anchor the work with geometric blocks, while an array of intricate black lines, organic shapes, and fluid ink gestures float across the surface. The stippled background pulses with texture, giving the piece an atmospheric depth that feels both architectural and biological. A vibrant green slash cuts diagonally across the central form, introducing a sense of motion and tension. Rufescent reflects VerBurg’s signature blend of control and improvisation, geometry and gesture—creating a vivid exploration of form and energy. From a private collection; acquired directly from the artist. Dimensions: 37.5 inches tall, 29.5 inches wide, and 1 inch deep (framed). In excellent condition. Paul VerBurg is a multidisciplinary artist trained in drawing and painting at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. Now based in Okemos, Michigan, VerBurg explores sculpture, assemblage, and abstract painting rooted in natural and physical forms. His work—ranging from plein air landscapes to genre-blending abstractions—has been exhibited nationally at institutions including the Eiteljorg Museum and the Autry Museum, and featured in Southwest Art and Art of the West. Active since the 1980s, his practice reflects a continual evolution of media and subject.
