About the Item

An important mounted battle scene, depicted with particularly expressive energy: cavalry in full frontal clash, overturned horses, and combatants intertwined in the foreground, in a swirling composition characteristic of 18th-century military art. The lively, energetic lines, the attention to the dynamics of the horses, and the dramatic effects bring this drawing closer to the known works of Philibert-Benoît de La Rue, an artist renowned for his military scenes and animated compositions. A fine historical piece, typical of the taste for heroic subjects and Baroque gestures during the Age of Enlightenment. Philibert-Benoît de La Rue was a French draftsman and engraver born in Paris in 1718 and active until around 1780. He is best known for his battle and cavalry scenes, often depicted with a vigorous line, a highly dramatic sense of movement, and richly detailed compositions. His works reflect the 18th-century fascination with military and heroic subjects, and he is among the artists appreciated for the quality of his drawings in red chalk, ink, or pen—intended for engraving or illustrating military works.
