This 1998 marker drawing captures a stripped-down face, reduced to its bare bones. The line, fluid and straightforward, recalls Matisse's last drawings—those dedicated to Nadia. Here, economy reigns supreme, every gesture counts, and yet everything vibrates.
The face emerges from a network of undulations with open contours. Far from closing, these lines escape, engaging the surrounding void as a full-fledged actor. It is not a boundary that separates, but a porosity that reveals: the white becomes material, an accomplice in a composition where solid and hollow dialogue without hierarchy.
The variation in thickness, shape, and length of the lines orchestrates the work's dynamics. The broader, elongated lines at the base of the neck establish a foundation, an almost telluric density. In contrast, the thinner, more rapid, nervous lines of the face and hair instill tension and a vital impulse. The absence of shading, combined with the sharp contrast of black on white, accentuates the immediacy of the gesture.
Presented in its original frame, the work shows a signature, but the artist's name remains indecipherable—a final withdrawal, perhaps, that echoes this figure suspended between appearance and disappearance.
