About the Item

This charming drawing is a preliminary study for the larger drawing, Trois etudes de femme assise, coiffee d'une fontange, in the British Museum. This little gem comes from Brooke Astor's collection at 778 Park Avenue. (Mrs. Astor's legendary apartment, and her collection, occupied the entire 16th floor of this noted Rosario Candela building, on the corner of 73rd and Park.) Its location unknown by scholars for many decades, it was not available to be viewed by Rosenberg and Prat when they were compiling their catalogue of Watteau's complete works, and was therefore listed in the section of questionable works. However, Margaret Morgan Grasselli, Curator of drawings at the National Gallery, Washington, the renowned expert of French 18th-century drawings, believes it is consistent with Watteau's work of about 1709, and that it served as a preliminary idea for the work in the British Museum. Antoine Watteau (1684–1721) occupies a foundational place in early eighteenth-century French art, and his drawings are central to that legacy. Working largely from the live model, he developed a supple graphic language that records fleeting posture, gesture, and expression with unusual economy. These sheets fed directly into the new genre of the fête galante—scenes of elegant sociability inflected by theater and the commedia dell’arte—and helped shift taste from Baroque grandeur toward the intimate, lyrical mode later called Rococo. Collected in his own time as works of independent value, Watteau’s drawings became a touchstone for eighteenth-century draftsmanship. Size in its French 18th-century carved and gilt frame is 10 ½” x 8 ¾”. Provenance: Victor Koch Dr. Edmund Schilling, London, 1957 Mathias Komor Mrs. Brooke Astor, New York City
