About the Item
This depiction of a seated male dancer, his dark eyes looking intently into the distance, was made by Emlen Etting, a Philadelphia artist who was active in the decades after World War II. Etting was fascinated with dancers and dancing, sailors and workers, and had a fluid style that captured the energy and dynamism of his subjects. He exhibited, over a long lifetime of painting, in more than 30 one-man and multiple-artist shows in Philadelphia, New York, Paris and elsewhere. He traveled in a prestigious circle of artists, writers and wealthy clients, and his works were purchased by museums and collectors such as Walter Annenberg, Helen Hayes and Mary Clark Rockefeller. The drawing is pencil on paper.
