About the Item

Set of Four Mid-Century Business Illustrations – Charles Burki, 1956–1964 This remarkable set of four original gouache and ink illustrations by Charles Burki (1909–1994) exemplifies the refined visual language of mid-century commercial art in postwar Europe. Executed between 1956 and 1964, these works depict scenes of modern business, industry, and intellect — the confident, sharply dressed men of the economic boom era — rendered with Burki’s characteristic precision and cinematic realism. The first composition portrays two men in suits conversing in front of an extensive bookcase, one holding a volume while the other balances a stack of books. Their gestures and expressions suggest collegial exchange, a subtle allegory for intellect, commerce, and the value of knowledge. The second, divided into two related panels, presents a businessman in his office overlooking a vast industrial landscape — smoke stacks rising from modern factories, symbolizing postwar progress and corporate power. The Fourth, from 1964, introduces a more psychological mood: an older man smoking a cigar in quiet reflection, while a younger figure stands in the background near a sunlit terrace lined with palm trees, evoking themes of ambition, legacy, and generational contrast. Together, these three works form a cohesive visual narrative of the mid-20th-century professional world. Burki’s mastery of grayscale gouache — soft gradients, crisp tailoring, and subtle highlights — recalls the style of classic European magazine and advertising illustration from the 1950s and 1960s. His figures are dignified yet human, their inner thoughts suggested by gesture and composition rather than overt drama. Born in Bandung, Dutch East Indies, Charles Burki’s life story is as compelling as his art. During World War II he survived both the sinking of a Japanese transport ship and the atomic bombing of Nagasaki while imprisoned as a POW. After returning to the Netherlands, he became one of the country’s leading illustrators, contributing to *Elsevier*, *Panorama*, and *De Groene Amsterdammer*. His experiences lent depth and empathy to his portrayals of people, whether soldiers, explorers, or executives. These three illustrations — unified by their technical perfection, emotional subtlety, and elegant design — represent Burki’s mature period and the optimism of a modernizing world. Condition: Excellent overall, with minimal toning and light handling traces along the margins. All three drawings are on heavy artist paper and retain their original studio mounts. Framing tips: Best presented in simple black, silver, or light wood frames with wide white mats to highlight their refined tonal range and period aesthetic.
