About the Item
Emlen Etting returned again and again to the theme of Icarus Falling, in part because it gave him an opportunity to depict the nude male in motion. This large drawing served as a study for a painting that followed, and is executed in brilliant, startling shades of greenish gold and deep red. Etting exhibited, over a long lifetime of painting, in more than 30 one-man and multiple-artist shows in Philadelphia, New York, Paris and elsewhere. He traveled in a prestigious circle of artists, writers and wealthy clients, and his works were purchased by museums and collectors such as Walter Annenberg, Helen Hayes, Mary Clark Rockefeller. This work was executed in watercolor and gouache; dimensions include matte.
