About the Item

Demonstrating an impressive confidence and mastery of detail, this drawing of a nude male triton, blowing a trumpet made from a seashell, was made by Allyn Cox, no doubt as a study for one of his murals. Cox spent 20 years painting and restoring murals at the US Capitol in Washington, D.C. starting in 1952; among his accomplishments was painting the Frieze of American history and restoring the apotheosis of Washington in the Rotunda. He also designed murals for three first-floor corridors in the House wing, now called the Cox Corridors, and a tour de force set of murals for the W.A. Clark Memorial Library at the University of California in Los Angeles. He was the son of Kenyon Cox, who painted murals for the Library of Congress, the Appellate Court House in New York City, and the Essex County Court House in Newark, New Jersey, among others. Drawing is executed in pencil on thin paper.
