About the Item

This stunning, Art Deco portrait of Two Guns White Calf, a chief of the Piegan Blackfeet tribe in Montana, exemplifies the stylized, bold drawings of Winold Reiss, who portrayed a series of Native Americans over the course of his career. Two Guns may be best known for promoting Glacier National Park for the Great Northern Railway, encouraging tourism to the region. Reiss is renowned for designing an enormous set of mosaic industrial scenes for the Union Terminal in Cincinnati, now the Cincinnati Museum Center. His portraits are known for their bold color palettes and simplified forms which gave his subjects great dignity and importance. This portrait -- drawn on a small sketch book for a friend, James Francis White -- is a diminutive variation of a larger pastel drawing that served as the basis for a print published by the Great Northern Railway in 1940. The drawing is pastel on paper, and is signed and dated 1937.

This classic example of WPA-period mural painting, executed by Verona Burkhardt for the Immigration and Naturalization Center in Los Angeles, depicts five Pueblo Indians in the foreground and a magnificent landscape of canyons and Pueblo dwellings in the background. This served as a study for one of five large canvases she delivered to California in 1941 or 1942, but the building was cordoned off due to America's entrance into World War II. Burkhardt (or Burkhard) was the daughter of two important artists and was introduced to painting and crafts at an early age. In her prime, she won seven U.S. Government mural commissions in national competitions for buildings in Wyoming, Montana, North Carolina, and Washington, D.C. She settled in Grand Junction...
