About the Item

Original Illustration of a Viking Longship by Charles Burki, 1963 – Gouache and Ink Drawing Original gouache and ink illustration of a Viking longship under sail, signed and dated “Charles Burki ’63” lower left. This dynamic maritime scene is a masterful example of Burki’s dramatic realism, showing a Norse warship cutting through the open sea with full striped sail and dragon-headed prow. Warriors stand poised along the deck with round shields lining the hull, while the helmsman and forward spearman anchor the composition with commanding presence. The artist’s use of monochrome wash, executed in tones of grey, sepia, and black, captures both the texture of the sea and the heavy sky, evoking motion and power. The dragon prow and patterned shields are rendered with remarkable precision, suggesting Burki’s training in architectural draftsmanship and his eye for historic accuracy. This original artwork was likely commissioned for an illustrated historical book or magazine series during the early 1960s—a period when Burki produced numerous meticulously researched depictions of ancient civilizations, explorers, and naval history for Dutch publishers such as Uitgeverij Succes and Kluitman. The composition is cinematic in its perspective, with the prow breaking the waves toward the viewer and the sail billowing dramatically against a brooding sky. The scene conveys both the fierce energy and craftsmanship associated with Viking seafaring culture. Biographical Note: Charles Burki (1909–1994) was a Dutch artist, illustrator, and wartime survivor whose career spanned architecture, propaganda art, and postwar publishing. Educated in the Netherlands, he moved to the Dutch East Indies in the 1930s, working as an architectural draughtsman and illustrator. During World War II, Burki endured imprisonment as a POW in Asia and survived the atomic bombing of Nagasaki. His postwar art—disciplined, exacting, and deeply atmospheric—reflects this extraordinary life experience. In the 1950s–60s he became a prolific illustrator of books, covers, and maps, combining technical skill with a distinct narrative flair. Condition report: Very good overall condition. Light toning and minor adhesive traces to the outer margins from prior mounting, not affecting the image. The surface and pigment remain bright, with rich contrast and crisp details throughout. Framing tips: Best displayed in a deep black or dark oak frame with a light grey or off-white mat. A floating mount presentation would emphasize the hand-painted edges and signature. Technique: Gouache and ink on paper Maker: Charles Burki, The Netherlands, 1963
